- Afarand journals have only two permitted sources of revenue: financial support from the journal's owner (a university or research institute) and author fees, where a journal charges them (see Author Fees). All other sources of revenue, including advertising, sponsored content and reprint sales, are not accepted.
- Editorial decisions are based only on the scholarly merit of the work and its relevance to the journal's scope. They are never influenced by revenue, by the payment or waiver of fees, or by the interests of funders or owners.
- The content of special or supplementary issues, if any, is decided through the usual editorial process. Supplements undergo the same peer review as the rest of the journal, and any funding source for a supplement is disclosed and has no influence on its content.
